What is Fab Lab Oulu and how do we operate?
Fab Lab Oulu is a Nordic Super Node, a fabrication laboratory with versatile capability for digital fabrication. Fab Lab Oulu complies with open innovation concept developed by MIT in the United States. We operate within University of Oulu premises.
In Fab Lab Oulu we provide a large set of tools, equipment, software, and practices - shared according to the Fab Lab concept. Fab Lab provides access and support for the following equipment:
- 3D printers
- 3D scanners
- Laser cutters
- Vinyl cutters
- CNC precision milling machine
- CNC router
- Electronics workbenches
- Open source design software
People of the University of Oulu community are our main customers. We also have open access times for customers outside the university community. For instance, we are in strong collaboration with companies and local schools. Anyone can build their own prototypes or fulfill their needs for research and education projects at Fab Lab Oulu!
Fab Lab Oulu organizes different courses, events, workshops, projects, and training activities related to digital fabrication.
Fab Lab Oulu adheres to the Fab Charter proposed by the Fab Foundation.

How to work at Fab Lab premises?
Education, projects and school collaboration
Fab Lab Oulu is devoted to teaching. We organize many different educational events for:
- University students and staff
- Schools all around Finland
- In-service teachers
Our educational portfolio includes:
- Fab Academy
- Seven university courses
- Various workshops for schools (either at Fab Lab Oulu or at the school's premises through our mobile Fab Lab)
Fab Academy, a program open to everybody, is a 6-month international and distributed training program that teaches principles and applications of digital fabrication using a hands-on approach. Participants acquire a diversity of skills, like:
- Web development
- Project management
- 2D and 3D computer-aided design
- Electronics design and production
- 3D printing
- Laser cutting
- Embedded programming
