The Finnish Doctoral Program Network in Artificial Intelligence (AI-DOC) is part of the FCAI, the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence Flagship, which creates AI solutions that work in a data-efficient, trustworthy, ethical and understandable way with real people. At the University of Oulu, pilot doctoral researchers will work in the area of AI in Communications and Signal Processing, including advanced methods in communications technology, statistical methods in signal processing, and analysis of images, video, speech, and audio signals.

Circular Materials Bioeconomy Network (CIMANET) is part of the FinnCERES Flagship, which promotes sustainable growth by working to harness the full potential of biomass in the bio-based industry. Areas of research in the pilot include sustainable processes, advanced sustainable materials, and cross-cutting thematic areas. The research will address the issues of resource sufficiency, access to clean water, and climate change.

The Digital Waters Doctoral Education Pilot is part of the Digital Waters Flagship, which works towards digital representations of real-world water systems. These represent novel solutions for improved scenario analysis, planning, and governance.

Research in the doctoral pilot will focus on the Flagship research area of complex interactions and responses in the hydro-, atmo- and cryosphere. Doctoral researchers in the pilot will gain skills needed to become experts in the field of water research, governance, and innovation.

The University of Oulu coordinates the Digital Water flagship and its doctoral education pilot. The EDUCA Flagship aims to promote the cross-pollination of methodological and conceptual approaches in educational sciences, psychology, learning analytics, and economics. Research in the EDUCA Flagship doctoral school pilot project will focus on the challenges of preparing children and young people for the future working life in a changing society. Doctoral researchers in the pilot will benefit from EDUCA's unique data infrastructure which comprises of more than 30 data sets of large-scale empirical follow-up studies, policy document data, and collaboration with Statistics Finland. Upon completion of their doctorates, they will be equipped with skills in content-based empirical data and register data research.

The National Doctoral Education Pilot Based on Immune system (ImmuDoc) is part of the inFLAMES flagship, which drives breakthroughs in immunology research and its applications in diagnostics and drug development and educates experts in immunological research to combat the substantial economic and societal burdens immune system malfunction represents.

The heavy machine industry is on the verge of a disruptive transformation towards intelligent machinery. The Intelligent Work Machines pilot will educate professionals with multidisciplinary engineering knowledge for intelligent machinery development. Research will focus on methods in robotics, mechatronics, machine design, machine dynamics, control engineering, software technologies, real-time computing, machine learning, and robotic learning.

Doctoral Education Pilot for Mathematics of Sensing, Imaging and Modeling (DREAM) has its foundation in the Center of Excellence in Inverse Modeling and Imaging, and in the FAME Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modeling. FAME provides beyond state-of-the-art scientific results and methodologies which range from the mathematical foundations of inverse problems through computational modelling and imaging to technical solutions and applications. The results combat imaging and sensing challenges in healthcare, materials and process industries, environmental applications, and beyond.

The MicroElectronics doctoral school pilot (Mieli) will train professionals to answer the continued and growing demand for experts in the ICT industry. Doctoral researchers in the pilot will carry world-class research alongside the Mieli principal investigators, who will guide them through the complex, team-effort-heavy research processes involved in microelectronics. Through its partner network, Mieli offers access to the most advanced Finnish infrastructures in microelectronics development.

Quantum Science and Technology doctoral pilot (QDOC) is built on the Quantum Flagship with the aim of securing Finland as a leading quantum-enabled economy and quantum-ready society. The doctoral pilot in software engineering proposes a novel way of doctoral supervision termed Finnish Acceleration of Scientific Talent (FAST). FAST leans on the agile and iterative methods of working developed in industrial software engineering. The program also relies on close collaboration with companies.

Software engineering is a discipline and research field that entails designing, developing, maintaining, and managing software systems. Within this field, doctoral dissertation topics will be based on the interests of doctoral researchers and practical problems in collaborating companies.
