Complementary Study Right

After graduating from your degree programme, your study right in the University of Oulu ends.

A student, who has completed a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with no right to a Master’s degree at the University of Oulu, has the right to apply for a complementary study right. If you wish to complement your know-how after graduating, check your own degree programme (from For you information below) how to apply for a complementary study right. Please note that the degree programme specific information prsented in the For you section is valid until July 31, 2020.

After graduating from your degree programme, your study right in the University of Oulu will end. If you wish to complement your knowledge after graduation you can apply for a complementary study right at the time of graduation. The complementary study right does not give you a right to study for a degree.The application form for complementary study right is attached to your application for degree certificate in OSAT system.  

Complementary study right can be used to  

  • complete minor studies that you have received a study right for during your degree studies 
  • take courses from freely selectable minor studies offered by the university 
  • take other courses available to students with complementary study right. 

The complementary study right can be granted on reasonable grounds based on the application and it can contain a maximum of 60 ECTS credits. The application must include the course or courses you wish to take during the complementary study right. When planning the studies, you must also take into account when the courses are offered. Complementary study right is granted within the units’ quotas.  

Complementary study right begins the day following your graduation and lasts two full terms (i.e. one academic year) after the term when you graduated. For example, if your date of graduation is February 22, 2020 the complementary study right will begin on February 23, 2020 and last until July 31, 2021 the latest. You are not able to postpone the start of the complementary study right and you are also not able to apply for an extension to it.  Complementary study right is granted by the Education dean. 

It is the student’s responsibility to register to the university and to the courses in question. Please note that students with complementary study right are not able to join the Student union. There is no fee for the complementary study right. 

After the complementary study right, you can complement your knowledge through other channels at the University of Oulu (such as open university studies or non-degree studies).

Student, who has graduated from the Faculty of Medicine will automatically receive a Complementary Study Right, which is valid for two (2) academic years from the end of the year of the graduation of the student in question. This right is valid with the same restrictions as for the degree students. That is, for example,  set number of participants or certain prerequisites and co-requisites of courses might restrict participation in classes. In these cases right to participate in an individual course is granted by the responsible teacher of the course. 

The Complementary Study Right only gives right to study at the Faculty of Medicine and only in accordance with the study rights the student had as a degree student.  The Complementary Study right is granted free of charge.  The right is recorded in the student and study register of the university as a right for the same major as in the completed master´s or licentiate´s degree.  In order to  exercise the Complementary Study Right the student has to register for studies as present. Student with the Complementary Study Right does not have the right to join the student´s union.

Complementary studies in the Faculty of Humanities

1. Graduates of the Faculty of Humanities

After completing your master’s degree in the Faculty of Humanities, you have the right to complement your studies for two whole semesters following your graduation. For example, if you graduate in October, you have the right to study until the end of the ongoing academic year (end of July) and for two academic years forward. This study right is given automatically and applies only to studies organized by the Faculty of Humanities. Please note that some subjects (for example languages) require passing an entrance examination (sivuainekoe).

If you want to continue studying after the study right expires, you have to apply for a new complementary study right (see instructions and deadlines below).

2. Graduates of other faculties of the University of Oulu

After completing your master’s degree, you may apply for a complementary study right for studies organized by the Faculty of Humanities:

  • Application deadlines: August 15 and December 1 at 3 p.m. (please note that also applications sent by mail must arrive by the deadlines). Send your application by email: study.humanities(at)oulu.fi or by mail: Academic Affairs/Faculty of Humanities, P.O. Box 8100, 90014 University of Oulu.
  • Study right is granted for a maximum of two years
  • Fees: 10 euros / study point, for example basic studies (25 cr) 250 euros
