Value adding of forest biomass – Raw materials for polymers from side products of biorefining

The project will develop ways to utilize by-products formed in the biorefining processes as raw materials for polymer production. The project is carried out by Chemical Process Engineering and Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Groups at University of Oulu. The project is mainly funded by the European Regional Development Fund via Council of Oulu Region.

In the production of valuable chemicals from plant biomass, also low valued by-products are unavoidable formed. The formation of these by-products is diminishing the material efficiency and profitability of the biorefining processes as well as causing fouling problems. In this project, the use of these by-products as raw material for manufacturing of polymeric products is researched. The goals are to enhance the techno-economical feasibility of the biorefining processes by utilisation of the by-products and to increase the use of bio-based raw materials in the production of polymers such as resins, elastomers and adhesives.
