Introduction to Doctoral Training, 920001J (1 ECTS)

Course description and instructions

  • This two-day course is organised in English twice a year, in spring term in Kontinkangas Campus and in autumn term in Linnanmaa Campus. The course includes home assignments.
  • Distance connection is available. In autumn 2020 the course will be organized only remotely.
  • This course is obligatory and belongs to the general and transferrable skills studies.

Scientific Research and Ethics, 920002J (2 ECTS)

  •  For instructions, please see our forms and instructions library
  •  After principal supervisor’s and follow-up group’s approval, the Doctoral Training Plan (incl. research plan, career plan and study plan) will be officially accepted by the Doctoral Training Committee, and credits are granted.
  •  This course belongs to the obligatory field-specific studies.

  • The credit is given when the doctoral researcher has had all the annual follow-up group meetings.
  • This course belongs in the obligatory general and transferrable skills studies.

Research plan seminar, unit-based code (1 ECTS)

  • Each doctoral researcher participates actively in research plan seminars during their studies. In the seminars, each doctoral researcher will present his/her research plan or part of his/her research.
  • The research plan seminars are organized by discipline, department, or doctoral programme. The responsible person for the major is the contact point to ask about the suitable seminar series or courses.
  • This course belongs to the obligatory field-specific studies.

  • The course unit is arranged in English in autumn term and in Finnish in spring term.
  • It is recommended to take this course at the beginning of doctoral studies.

Basics of University Pedagogy for Doctoral Students, 920005J (2 ECTS)

  • Course languages are Finnish and English both in autumn and spring term.
  • This is an obligatory course only if you need university pedagogy training and you aim to include teaching in your study plan (check your study requirements).
  • You can include this in your optional general and transferrable skills studies.

UniOGS Mentoring programme, 920015J (0 ECTS)

  • Continues through the whole semester.

Utilization of Patent Databases in research, 920013J (0.5 ECTS)

  •  The course is arranged in Finnish in autumn and in English in spring term.
  • A maximum number of participants is 30. The course is aimed at doctoral and senior researchers. Doctoral researchers have the precedence over senior scientists.

IP Rights and Research, 920016J (0.5 ECTS)

  • The course is held once in English both in autumn and in spring term.
  • The course is aimed at doctoral and senior researchers.

Communicating science to the media, 920011J (1 ECTS)

  • The course is arranged once in autumn (in Finnish) and once in spring (in English).
  • In the course you will learn to write about your research in popularized form and you can practice an elevator pitch or prepare yourself for a radio or TV interview.
  • As a course assignment a popularized description of thesis research or a blog text about your research is written.
  • You can include this to your optional general and transferrable skills studies.

Scientific Communication, 920010J (0.5 ECTS )

Course description, instructions and schedule

The course includes 3 x 4 hour lectures and 5 hours of personal work. Doctoral researcher must attend at least two different lectures from the list below to pass the course and obtain the study credits:

    Writing scientific journal articles.
    Writing a doctoral dissertation.
    Writing the compiling part of a compilation dissertation.

Introduction to Data Visualization work shop, 920026J (1 ECTS)

  • The course gives a practical overview on how data visualization can be used both as a research tool and for communicating research objectives and results to audience.
  • The participants will work on their own data visualization project using either their own data or data provided by the instructor.
