Biography

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Oulu, research unit of History, Culture and Communications. In my PhD thesis, I study refugee experience by exploring and comparing experiences of Lapland war (1944–1945) evacuees and contemporary refugees in Finland. In analyzing the research data, I utilize social philosopher Axel Honneth’s (1995) recognition theory, oral history research and qualitative content analysis.

I am working on my dissertation as part of the multidisciplinary research project 'Recognition and belonging: Forced migrations, troubled histories and memory cultures’ (Academy of Finland, 2017–2021). The Finnish Cultural Foundation has awarded a three-year working grant for my study.
