Tourism Geographies
I am an Associate Professor (tenure-track) in Tourism Geography at the University of Oulu, with a research focus on tourism, sustainability, crisis and resilience, and geopolitics. My work engages critically with tourism's role in broader social and political transformations, particularly in contexts marked by uncertainty or disruption. I approach tourism not just as an industry, but as a social and spatial phenomenon, deeply entangled with questions of power, identity, mobility, and resistance. I’m interested in how tourism opens up questions about belonging, memory, mobility, and the future. Much of what I do is shaped by a concern for justice and a desire to think critically about the structures, social, political, and economic, that shape tourism in the world today.
In addition to my position at Oulu, I hold visiting and adjunct roles at institutions in Finland, Malaysia, and France, where I teach and supervise in areas such as sustainable tourism, hospitality resilience, and crisis management. I have published widely in leading tourism and hospitality journals and continue to collaborate with international colleagues on research that addresses both theoretical and applied questions in tourism studies. I am always interested in critical, and engaged conversations about tourism’s role in contemporary society, whether in classrooms, research teams, or broader public debates.
