Timo Tuovinen is a postdoctoral researcher and medical specialist. His interests include digital health, translational clinical research, medical education and physician management. In addition to the above roles, Tuovinen serves as the District Chief Physician of the Finnish Medical Association in the Northern Finland region.
Tuovinen is part of the FinnTelemedicum research group investigating different aspects of the digitalization of healthcare. Tuovinen has defended his PhD in Medicine from the Oulu Functional NeuroImaging (OFNI) group. His doctoral research primarily focused on new MRI-based imaging methods of the brain's cleansing system, especially for measuring the glymphatic system. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles, two chapters in scientific books (peer-reviewed), several peer-reviewed articles in conference proceedings, as well as articles in scientific journals and publications aimed at professional audiences. He has written over 30 published columns or opinion pieces.
He is a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. Currently he specializes in neurosurgery and neuromodulation of pain. He also has years of experience in primary care and several hospital specialties, such as surgery, pediatrics, surgery and radiology. He also has years of experience teaching medicine at the University of Oulu (since 2009). He has also been awarded for his contributions to both medical and social organizations, such as Duodecim, student organizations and scouts. He is honorary member of Oulu Medical Guild (medical student's organization). In his own opinion, one of the most important achievements is being the father of two wonderful sons.
