Business and security perspectives on 6G explored at the University of Oulu Brown Bag Seminar

The future of wireless connectivity is not only about technological innovation but also about the business models, ecosystems, and strategic choices that will shape its adoption. These themes were explored by Professor Petri Ahokangas, Director of the Martti Ahtisaari Institute and Professor at Oulu Business School, during the Brown Bag Seminar "Shaping the Connected Future: Business and Security Perspectives of 6G and Beyond" held at the University of Oulu on 12 October 2026.

Opening the discussion from a business perspective, Professor Petri Ahokangas examined how emerging wireless technologies, including 6G, are expected to transform industries, create new value networks, and redefine the relationships between technology developers, service providers, businesses, and end users. He highlighted the importance of understanding not only technological capabilities but also the evolving business ecosystems required to unlock the full potential of future connectivity.

The seminar brought together participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds to discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by next-generation wireless networks. Alongside the business dimension, the event explored critical security considerations associated with increasingly interconnected digital environments.

Security and resilience in future wireless networks

Associate Professor Pawani Porambage from the Secure Programming Research Group, working with the SafeEarth research programme, delivered a presentation titled "Evolution of Mobile Network Security." She provided an overview of how mobile network security has evolved through successive generations of wireless communications and how it may develop towards future 6G architectures. The discussion addressed emerging cyber threats, privacy considerations, and the importance of building trustworthy and resilient communication systems from the outset.

The Brown Bag seminar highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between business, technology, and security experts. Bringing these perspectives together is essential to ensuring that future wireless connectivity is not only innovative and efficient but also secure, resilient, and beneficial to society.
