Strengthening ties between Kazakhstan and Finland: Ambassador’s visit to the University of Oulu

The University of Oulu had the honour of welcoming the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Finland, Azamat Abdraimov, during his official visit to Oulu this week. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to discuss ongoing collaborations and explore new avenues for partnership between Kazakhstan and Finland in research, education, healthcare and innovation.

As part of his visit, the ambassador met with the Kazakh nationals who work at the university, two of whom represent Martti Ahtisaari Institute at the Oulu Business School – Postdoctoral Researcher Dr Raushan Aman and Doctoral Researcher Aigerim Dairabekova, and one represents Water, Energy and Environment Research Unit of the University of Oulu – Postdoctoral Researcher Dr Aziza Baubekova.

Representatives of the University of Oulu highlighted the university’s expertise and current projects related to water management, health data coordination, and digital innovation. The discussions focused on fostering joint initiatives that address global challenges through shared research and educational programs.

During the discussions, special attention was given to the cooperation between the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Finland and the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation in Helsinki. The Martti Ahtisaari Institute and the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation share the same Chairman of the Board, which further strengthens the institutional connection and the potential for collaborative peacebuilding and academic initiatives.

Talks focused on shared interests in research, ICT, and sustainable development

The Ambassador expressed strong interest in the University of Oulu’s research excellence and international collaboration model, particularly in the fields of ICT, business, and sustainable development. Both parties emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation through student and staff exchanges, joint research, and academic mobility.

The University of Oulu also underlined the diverse education opportunities available to Kazakhstani students, especially in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Business fields, which align closely with Kazakhstan’s strategic development goals.

This visit marked an important step in strengthening the bridge between Finnish and Kazakhstani academic communities, paving the way for long-term cooperation that contributes to innovation, sustainability, peace, and global knowledge exchange.
