Construction of the new building for the Teacher Training School to begin in August

The new building project for the Teacher Training School of the University of Oulu is progressing as planned towards implementation. Key investment decisions for the project have now been approved in two separate board meetings: the board the University of Oulu approved the investment costs and leasing decision on 26 May, and the board of University Properties of Finland (SYK) confirmed both the investment and leasing decisions on 3 July.

The new building will be located in the north-west corner of the Linnanmaa campus, on a plot owned by SYK. A building permit has already been granted, and various works, including groundworks, have been under way on the site over the summer. Construction is scheduled to begin in August. The aim is for the new school building to be ready for use in August 2028.

Covering approximately 8,400 gross square metres, the new building is designed for 600 pupils including basic education grades 1–9 of the University of Oulu Teacher Training School. The upper secondary school will continue nearby in the Environmental Sciences Building (Ympäristötietotalo).

“This project represents a significant investment in the development of the Linnanmaa area. At SYK, we are pleased that the new building project for the Teacher Training School of the University of Oulu is now moving into the implementation phase following these investment decisions,” says Sanna Sianoja, CEO of SYK.

In designing the new building, the focus has been on the functional needs of the school, with spaces dimensioned to meet the requirements of the City of Oulu’s school network. At the request of the University of Oulu, SYK has conducted a public procurement process for the construction contracts required for the project.

“We are pleased with the user-oriented design of the project, as well as the safe location and good accessibility of the future school building. The timing for construction is also favourable, as the bids were below the estimated costs. Above all, we expect the new building to deliver durable, long-lasting quality,” says Vesa-Heikki Kemppainen, Property Manager at the University of Oulu.

The University of Oulu will act as the tenant of the new building, with the Teacher Training School as its main user. Pupils in the comprehensive school have been studying partly in temporary facilities since autumn 2024.
