UN Orange Days: Domestic violence lecture and overall patch campaign at the University of Oulu

The UN’s Orange the World campaign is held annually from November 25 to December 10 to end violence against women and girls. The campaign’s orange color symbolizes hope for a future where living free from violence is a fundamental right for everyone. The University of Oulu joins the campaign with a public lecture on domestic violence, a student overall patch campaign, and by bringing orange colour to campus screens.

The open lecture will address domestic violence, how to recognize it, and the work done in shelters to support those affected. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 18, from 14:15 to 15:45 via Zoom, and it will be in Finnish. The speakers are Heli Siltala, University Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Oulu, and Tuire Tikkanen, Head of the Domestic Violence Unit at Oulu Mother and Child Home and Shelter.

The campaign will include an event at the orange coat racks on Tuesday, November 25, from 11:00 to 13:00, where oranges and student overall patches are handed out. The event is organized in collaboration with the Student Union.

The University of Oulu conducts extensive research on gender-related topics, including manifestations of misogyny online. The university has also participated in the EU 2020 RESET project, which aims to mainstream gender equality by considering intersecting differences and promoting fairness in universities. During the project, a tool called the "alertometer", or harassment meter, was developed to help examine university culture (see a larger image here). The harassment meter helps identify forms of harassment and violence so they can be addressed promptly.

If you notice your behavior is inappropriate - change it. If you experience harassment or inappropriate treatment at the University of Oulu, follow these guidelines.
