Women's and Gender Studies is an inter-, cross- and multidisciplinary field of studies and research that challenges traditional disciplinary paradigms. The basic task of WGS is to plan, provide and develop gender responsive and gender critical teaching and research.

As a multidisciplinary field of studies Women's and Gender Studies serves the whole university: teaching is arranged in collaboration with various teachers and researchers from different Faculties and departments and it is possible to seek as a student from all the Faculties of the University of Oulu. Research and development collaboration is carried out within the University but also nationally and internationally by taking part to mainly Nordic and European networks and by creating projects and partnerships with them globally.

Luminous – a project concentrating on socially sustainable northern communities – is the most wide-ranging inner project in the University of Oulu, which WGS is involved with. There are around 120 researchers from five different Faculties in the Luminous community. Gendering Safety is the name of the subgroup of the gender researchers in Luminous community.. There are around 26 researchers from three different faculties in this subgroup led by doc. Vappu Sunnari (KTK) and doc. Seija Jalagin (HuTK).
