Mentoring Programme connects students with industry experts

University of Oulu’s Mentoring Programme helps students with their career planning and offers mentors an opportunity to share their expertise. In the programme’s mid-way meeting, students and mentors got to know the other participants in a networking-themed event.

During a four-month period, a mentor and a Master’s student will get to know each other, set up meetings, and discuss themes around career and future opportunities. Mentors and students also come together in joint meetings for all participants. The programme runs annually from autumn to spring.

Oulu Business School’s International Business Management Master’s student Karen and programme mentor Timo Huotari, an OBS marketing alumnus and Sales Director at Prometec Tools, shared similar views on how the programme helps to broaden perspectives and create connections.

Karen appreciates the Mentoring Programme and the opportunities it provides to connect with other people. She names building new connections as her primary motivation for joining: “I think the programme is especially good for us international students,” Karen says. “I’ve been here for two and a half years, and I’ve seen an increasing number of international students, so initiatives like these are very helpful.”

Timo previously participated in the programme as a student and found it very useful. Now, as an alumnus, this is his second time mentoring: “The mentoring gives you an opportunity to slow down and reflect a bit,” he says. “And I also get to help young people.”

The mentoring programme is coordinated by the University of Oulu’s Learning Support and Wellbeing Centre, together with Alumni Relations.
The event was organized by Solution Designers Iina Tolonen, Salla Herrala, Pauliina Paija, and Alumni Coordinator Riitta Arffman.
