Starting university studies is a major transition, and it can be difficult at first to take in all the new information. It is perfectly normal to forget some things or feel that the bigger picture is still unclear. This post brings together key support services and resources that may help you get started and support you throughout your studies.
Useful services and tips for the beginning of your studies

Information Sessions

  • The University organises a general orientation event for all new international degree students on August 27th, 2026, in L3. Please note that the Orientation is organised on the Linnanmaa campus, and online participation is not possible. Download the MazeMap app to find university facilities and maps.
  • Faculty-specific orientation week programmes. During orientation week, there is a welcome desk in the main lobby of the University of Oulu where staff can help you find the correct location if needed.

Individual Study Arrangements

You can receive a recommendation for individual study arrangements without an appointment if you already know what accommodations you need, such as extra time in exams, flexibility with deadlines, or alternative ways of demonstrating your learning. Groups

  • Peer support for neurodivergent students. The group provides a space to share experiences with peers and explore practical strategies for studying, executive functioning, and well-being. The English-language group starts in February 2027.

Moodle courses

  • START – the University of Oulu's guide for new students brings together essential information and useful resources to help you develop the skills you need for university studies. The START guide is available in the Moodle learning environment. Sign in to the guide with your University of Oulu credentials. Course key: start
  • Develop your study skills by completing the self-paced Study Skills Moodle course (1 ECTC). The course focuses on identifying your own learning styles and strengthening essential study skills. Log in using your university credentials. Course key: studyskills26-27

Other University Support Services

  • Tutor Teacher: Your tutor teacher provides guidance during the early stages of your studies and can also direct you to other student services. If you don't know who your tutor teacher is after the orientation week, please contact Faculty Study Services.
  • Study Psychologist: Study psychologists can provide support with issues such as study skills, time management, and managing academic workload.
