Our orientation programme is designed to help new incoming international students to get acquainted with the university and the city, settle in, and start their studies at the University of Oulu. Orientation consists of a series of pre-arrival videos and an orientation week at the beginning of the autumn term. Programme includes important matters such as permits, university practices, student services, and information about your new home town. Faculties will also organize their own programme to their students.

Please note that the Orientation will be organised on the Linnanmaa campus, and online participation will not be possible. Orientation is a part of your studies, so we expect all new students to participate.

Personal tutor teacher and student tutors

Each student in Bachelor's and Master’s degree programmes has a designated personal tutor teacher and student tutor who will guide and advice the student. Tutor teacher and student tutor will provide support and assistance to students in their studies.

1. Degree Program structures and courses

A 5-year program at the Faculty of Education and Psychology comprises of a 3-year Bachelor’s degree followed by a 2-year Master’s degree. The degrees include studies in the major subject and minor subject, language, communication and orientation studies, as well as elective courses. It is possible to take part in an international exchange and do practices abroad/in Finland during the studies. The study groups are typically 20 people.

The right to pursue studies in a 5-year program is granted for seven years, and that for studies in a 2-year Master’s program for four years.

Please note that students admitted to the University may be requested to provide an extract from the criminal records for the assessment of their ability to study. Such an extract may be requested only from students whose studies include practical training or other activities involving work with minors.

The extract will be requested before the beginning of the practical training or other activity. To ensure the safety of minors, it is necessary to ascertain that the student about to begin practical training has no criminal record of certain serious crimes (sex offence, murder, aggravated assault and battery, aggravated burglary and robbery and narcotics offence).

2. Study Counselling

You can seek counselling whenever you feel you need it. In the Faculty of Education and Psychology, you are helped, among others, by the study advisors (Education Designers), teacher tutors and tutor students.

Change in organization of the Master´s Programme in Biomedical Engineering

Beginning from academic year 2024-25 Master´s Programme in Biomedical Engineering will be coordinated by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). In spring 2024 application round all new students were selected to the programme with target degree in Master of Science (Tech). No intake to this programme was organized in spring 2024 at the Faculty of Medicine (FMED) with target degree in Master of Health Sciences. The last intake to the FMED was in spring 2023.

General information about starting the studies

You will find general information about starting your studies and steps to be taken in university´s web-page For new degree students.

Orientation week

The studies will begin with orientation, which is organized during week 36 from September 2nd to September 6th, 2024. It will include general programme for university's all new students and programme-specific programme. In addition, during week 37 there are additional events, which you might like to consider and participate in (for example official opening ceremonies of the university and organizations presenting themselves on Linnanmaa campus).

NOTICE! Briefing of the BME students will be arranged on orientation weeks. The new date of orientation event will be informed later (as quickly as possible). In the briefing there will be participants from the degree programme, academic affairs service team and from the Guild of Medical Technology Students of Oulu (OLTO). You will meet your tutor teacher, with whom you will prepare your personal study plan (PSP). Also, your student tutors (“kummis”) will attend, and they will be your guide on campuses and tell you about the studies and studying from the student´s point of view. You will hear more about the degree programme and starting and proceeding with the studies.

The courses will begin in accordance with the course-specific schedules.

Under some themes, in the end of the page, there is a “For you” drop down menu, where you can choose your own programme for checking the additional, programme-specific information. This “For you” information will be updated regularly, even during coming autumn, when necessary.

Study guide and schedule for academic year 2024-2025

Study guide for Master's Programme in Biomedical Engineering 2024-2025 have been published including schedule for autumn 2024. Schedule for spring 2025 will be published in the beginning of November 2024. In the study guide there is a general description of the programme (“Show description”) and its study structure (“Show structure”). By choosing an individual course in the structure you will find the course-specific description and further – course timetable by clicking the “blue ribbon” in the description page.

Tuudo mobile application is a versatile tool for supporting and managing your studies and includes, for example, possibility to prepare your personal schedule. After having uploaded the app you will be able to pick up the courses to your Tuudo-calendar first by choosing “follow” and then beginning from Aug 1, 2024 – enroll for the chosen autumn courses and beginning from December 1, 2025 - for the chosen spring courses.

Please note that students have to register for the courses. For registering you will need user ID & password of Uni Oulu computer network which you will get after registering as a present student for study year 2024-25 and paying the Uni Oulu student union membership fee. Please see the checklist for new degree students for instructions on what to do before your arrival.

In addition, a general university level orientation for all new international degree students will be organized. All new international degree students should participate to this event too.

OMS Orientation Weeks for all new degree students will begin with the faculty and programme information sessions. The weeks also include other events, e.g. UniOulu Self-Hack, planning your personal studies (preparing a Personal Study Plan). Some of your courses will start already on the first week. You will also be nominated a Tutor Teacher and a Tutor Student.

Personal Study Plan: Target to choose about 3 courses per one period which will give you about 15 cr in one period: 15 cr per period / 30 cr per semester / 60 cr per academic year.

Welcome to study in Master´s Programme in Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science (EBDS)!

General information about starting the studies

You will find general information about starting your studies and steps to be taken in university´s web-page For new degree students. Kindly study carefully this page.

Student account and password

When you have confirmed your study place and registered to the University for academic year 2024-25 as a present student, the information about confirmation and registration will transfer between systems to university´s IT-services and the new student's user account will be created within a week after registration. Kindly note, however, that since your study right will begin on 1st of August 2024, the account can be created on this date at the earliest. You will be sent an email to the address you have given in your application for study place about your account being created and ready for activation. Should you not be able to use any of the activation methods presented in the university´s web page "Student Account" -> New student, kindly contact IT-services support address for students helpdesk@oulu.fi for agreeing on additional way of activation.

Kindly note that with the account you also will receive a university email address xxxxxx@student.oulu.fi, which we recommend you to start to use immediately in the beginning of studies. It is the official address, which university uses for sending different information related to studies etc.

Kindly note that in order to be able to exercise your study right and have university´s account and access to university´s systems you have to be registered as present. Even though the registration period for new students of international degree programmes will end on 13th of Sept, 2024, the studies will start with orientation already on 2nd of Sept, 2024 so we highly recommend you to register before that to make the most of the programme and studies already then.

Orientation week (programme pdf 24.5.24)

The studies will begin with orientation, which is organized during week 36 from September 2 to Sept 6, 2024. In the beginning of the week your tutor students will welcome you on university´s campus “Kontinkangas” at the Faculty of Medicine, which is located near the Oulu University Hospital. You will be able to have a look at the campus premises and activities via ThingLink.

In addition during the week there will be a separate kick-off event in Nallikari camping area and other university level programme described in the programme. On June 17, 2024 coordinator of the degree programme has sent more detailed programme of the kick-off event to admitted students, who have taken all required steps by given deadlines.

Kindly note that some orientation events will take place also during week 37 such as, for example, official opening of the academic year, student fair and student festival.

During the orientation week you will hear more about the degree programme and starting and proceeding with the studies.

In general, courses will start in accordance with course-specific schedules in week 37 beginning on 9th of Sept, 2024. First lecture of the Statistical Methods in Epidemiology I will be organized on Friday Sept 6, 2024 at 8.15-10.00.

Master´s Programme in Business Analytics in brief

The Programme combines data technology and information processing with business knowledge, and is organized by two different faculties: the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) and the Oulu Business School.

The Master of Science in Technology degree (specializing in Computer Science and Engineering) and the Master of Science degree (specializing in Information Processing Science) are provided by the Faculty of ITEE. The Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree is provided by the Oulu Business School.

The choice of specialization and thereby the degree is made when applying for the programme. In Business Analytics Programme there is a curriculum and study structure for each of three specialization / degree.

The language of instruction is English.

General information about starting the studies

You will find general information about starting your studies and steps to be taken in university´s web-page For new degree students.

Orientation week

The studies will begin with orientation, which is organized during week 36 from September 2nd to September 6th, 2024. It will include general programme for university's all new students and programme-specific programme. In addition, during week 37 there are additional events, which you might like to consider and participate in (for example an official opening ceremonies of the university and organizations presenting themselves on Linnanmaa campus).

Briefing of the Business Analytics students will be arranged on September 4th, 2024 at 9 - 10, on Linnanmaa campus in lecture room TA101.

In the briefing there will be participants from the degree programme and faculties´ academic affairs service teams. You will hear more about the degree programme and starting and proceeding with the studies. Also, your student tutors (“kummis”) will attend, and they will be your guide on campuses and tell you about the studies and studying from the student´s point of view.

The courses will begin in accordance with the course-specific schedules.

We also recommend you to study carefully the university´s For Students web pages, where all information concerning studies and studying has been compiled by themes. Under some themes, in the end of the page, there is a “For you” drop down menu, where you can choose your own programme for checking the additional, programme-specific information. This “For you” information will be updated regularly, even during coming autumn.

Study guide and schedule for academic year 2024-2025

Schedule for autumn 2024 has been published as a part of the Peppi study guide, more specifically on the Peppi study guide for Business Analytics, Computer Science and Engineering and the Peppi study guide for Business Analytics, Information Processing Science . Schedules for spring 2025 will be published at the turn of October - November 2024. In the study guide there is a general description of the programme (“Show description”) and its study structure (“Show structure”). By choosing an individual course in the structure you will find the course-specific description and further – course timetable by clicking the “blue ribbon” in the description page.

Tuudo mobile application is a versatile tool for supporting and managing your studies and includes, for example, possibility to prepare your personal schedule. After having uploaded the app you will be able to pick up the courses to your Tuudo-calendar first by choosing “follow” and then beginning from Aug 1, 2024 – enroll for the chosen autumn courses and beginning from December 1, 2024 - for the chosen spring courses.

Please note that students have to register for the courses. For registering you will need user ID & password of Uni Oulu computer network which you will get after registering as a present student for study year 2024-25 and paying the Uni Oulu student union membership fee. Please see the checklist for new degree students for instructions on what to do before your arrival.

More information about the schedule, enrollment etc. will be available during the orientation week.

The studies will begin with orientation, which is organized from 2 September to 6 September 2024. Orientation for all new degree students will start with the welcome and information sessions, and includes also the Self-Hack Event on Friday, 6 September from 10 am – 13 pm (https://www.oulu.fi/en/self-hack)

Completing your studies

The course catalogues give you an overview of your degree program, its structure, and the timing of your studies. The catalogue also describes practices related to studies. Personal tutor teacher and tutor students (kummi)

All students have a personal tutor teacher appointed by the faculty. Tutor teacher's task is to guide and advice you in the early stages of studying. The tutor teacher will introduce to you your field of studies, occupational issues, and important questions in working life. Each student in Master’s degree programme have also a designated personal tutor students (kummi) who will help when studies start at University of Oulu.

In addition, a general university level orientation for all new international degree students will be organized. All new international degree students should participate to this event too.

OMS Orientation Weeks for all new degree students will begin with the faculty and programme information sessions. The weeks also include other events, e.g. UniOulu Self-Hack, planning your personal studies (preparing a Personal Study Plan). Some of your courses will start already on the first week. You will also be nominated a Tutor Teacher and a Tutor Student.

Personal Study Plan: Target to choose about 3 courses per one period which will give you about 15 cr in one period: 15 cr per period / 30 cr per semester / 60 cr per academic year.
