The work package examines the applicability, benefits, and limitations of using hydrogen in Finnish defence logistics. Since the operational activities of the Finnish Defence Forces and the mobilization of reservists are strongly based on the infrastructure and equipment of the civilian sector, changes in civilian transportation cannot be separated from the needs of military operations. Hydrogen is considered one of the most likely alternatives to replace fossil fuels in heavy transport, and its widespread adoption will directly affect the possibilities and limitations of defence logistics in the future. This work package investigates how the acceptance of hydrogen can be enhanced among business actors. The research includes a literature review, empirical studies, and the development of conceptual frameworks. Findings will be disseminated at academic conferences and public events, supporting the acceptance of hydrogen-related business applications, particularly mobile hydrogen refueling solutions. ITEE - CWC, M3S, 6G.

The objective is to assess the requirements of a mobile hydrogen refueling station and its ecosystem for 5G/6G technology and a digital management system. The work package includes preliminary declaration and initial testing of sensor technologies and data analytics required for the functionality and optimized use of a hydrogen refueling station through approximate simulation including the data processing and transfer of the hydrogen refueling station, and possibly the utilization of artificial intelligence for an optimized hydrogen refueling service. In addition, together with work packages 1 and 5, it will be investigated how these technologies can be utilized for the needs of the hydrogen economy and security of supply. Together with work packages 2 and 5, potential commercial actors who can invest in digital services for the hydrogen economy will be identified. The 6G Test Center supports the development of a mobile hydrogen refueling station by providing a testing platform for sensor technologies, data analytics, and artificial intelligence solutions. The test center can evaluate the role of different network solutions and the utilization of edge computing in optimizing services and security. Transport System and Infrastructure Requirements (FTech-CIV): Through pilot testing, this work package examines the impacts of hydrogen refueling stations on both local and regional transport systems and transport infrastructures. Applying scenario analyses, the operations of hydrogen stations and their broader effects on transportation systems will be assessed. Particular attention is given to traffic safety and compliance with the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). Research Director Stefan Walter, Civil Engineering.

FTech-IEM.

This work package aims to investigate and analyze the value chains, ecosystem and market landscape of hydrogen refueling in Finland and the EU by identifying critical success factors for developing a viable and scalable hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Based on these findings, a potential placement strategy for hydrogen refueling stations in Northern Ostrobothnia will be modeled, considering traffic flows, infrastructure, planned hydrogen production facilities, and ongoing hydrogen economy projects to support the development of a sustainable and efficient distribution network. This work package focuses on assessing the properties of hydrogen transportation and storage materials, particularly in Finland’s cold climate. The aim is to increase knowledge of steel materials that support the implementation of safe and cost-effective solutions for mobile hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
