Aims of doctoral training

The doctoral researcher

  • becomes well-versed in their own field of research and its social significance
  • gains knowledge and skills needed to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and to produce new scientific knowledge within their field of research
  • becomes conversant with the development, basic problems and research methods of their own field of research
  • gains such knowledge of the general theory of science and of other disciplines relating to their own field of research as enables them to follow developments in them
  • gains adequate language and communication proficiency and other skills required in demanding expert and development roles and in international collaboration

Degree programme and doctoral programme

Each doctoral researcher pursues the doctoral degree in one of the doctoral degree programmes of the University of Oulu. The degree programme determines the contents and the extent of doctoral studies. At the time of admission the new doctoral researcher will also be linked with one of the four doctoral programmes. Doctoral programmes support e.g. the organising of field specific courses. Doctoral researchers and supervisors are affiliated in the research units and faculties.
