Fibre and Particle Engineering

The aim of the Fibre and Particle Engineering research unit is to promote the circular and bio-economy with means of material research. We are an interdisciplinary research unit working with materials made of wood and cellulose as well as industrial inorganic side streams. We work in cooperation with several Finnish as well as European companies, research institutes and universities. If you are interested in doing research with us, please do not hesitate to be in contact!

Cellulose research group
The Cellulose research team focuses on biomaterials and chemicals derived from various lignocellulose resources – especially on cellulose of nano- and micromaterials, their hybrid structures with inorganics/biocompounds and their applications. These include bionanochemicals such as adsorbents, flocculation agents, surfactants, emulsifiers and novel green materials such as barriers and films, filaments, foams, filters and membranes, nanopapers, and papermaking, biomedical and electronic applications. We are also focusing on lignocellulose modification using deep eutectic solvents and periodate oxidation chemistries.
Inorganic binders research group
Our research focuses on CO2-conscious concrete-like materials, such as geopolymers and other binders based on industrial side streams. To advance circular economy our goal is to find out new applications for inorganic side streams as well as to combine high-level academic research and commercialization of the research results.
InStreams Hub
The inorganic circular economy research community, InStreams Hub, is a cross-disciplinary hub in solving global sustainability challenges at the University of Oulu. InStreams Hub focuses on interdisciplinary inorganic materials research and engineering and the management and utilization of inorganic side streams. It develops sustainable value chains and has high interest to put scientific research into practice. The Hub also provides research-based information to support decision-making and participates in public debate. The activities create conditions and models for continuous cross-border cooperation, between companies and research institutes.
Open positions
We have an open doctoral student position. It is interdisciplinary in nature and combines multiscale modelling with novel sustainable cements. The results will help solve the climate challenge through fundamental research; cement is the material with highest potential for carbon capture and utilization (CCU).
