Biocenter Oulu research project call in the strategic focus area Molecular and Environmental Basis for Life-Long Health

The University of Oulu's strategy strengthens its role as a high-level international science and innovation university that contributes to solving global challenges through the selected focus areas of research. Tackling the identified global challenges requires multidisciplinary approaches and research h excellence. The University of Oulu supports the strategy through evaluation of its research, as well as regular open calls and external evaluation of projects supported by the university's focus institutes.

University of Oulu's focus institute Biocenter Oulu is the oldest of the Finnish biocenters, established in 1986. Biocenter Oulu coordinates multidisciplinary research and doctoral training in the strategic research focus area "Molecular and environmental basis for lifelong health" of the University of Oulu.

Biocenter Oulu is now calling for NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS for the four-year period of 1/2020 – 12/2023. The call is open for only those Principal Investigators (PIs) who submitted the preregistration documents for the call in June 2018.

The research projects should address the following global challenge recognised in the strategy of the University of Oulu:


In this strategic focus area we generate greater understanding of the factors that affect health during life and how this knowledge can be translated into the benefit of lifelong health. We explore human life from fetal development to old age, including molecular and physiological properties, and environmental, social and psychosocial factors. In addition, we promote learning into the possibilities of combining ICT with health and service research to create new innovations in connected health.

The proposed research projects should represent well-focused research of high international quality. The PIs should be highly recognized in their field of science and have high-quality scientific as well as a demonstrated ability to gain notable external funding for research. The PI and project's researchers must work at the University of Oulu and the PI has or negotiates an affiliation with the University of Oulu.

PIs who submitted their preregistration documents for this call are welcome to submit an application as instructed below. We accept only one application per responsible PI. The selected projects will be targeted for strategic support in the form of doctoral student and post-doctoral positions. The positions will be filled according to the procedures approved by the administration of the university.

Application documents listed in the "Instructions for the BCO research project applications" should be combined in the order shown and submitted as a single combined pdf-file. The file should be named lastname_firstname-BIOCENTER_application and sent electronically to the Registry of the University of Oulu (kirjaamo(at) by January 14, 2019.

Selection procedure

An independent international scientific evaluation committee nominated by the Rector of the University of Oulu will evaluate the applications on the basis of criteria similar to those used by the Academy of Finland. These include scientific merit and position in research field, novelty and feasibility of the research plan, training of researchers, and the significance and impact of the planned research. The final decisions will be made by the Rector of the University of Oulu according to the recommendations of the evaluation committee. The positions will be directed to the projects in the ranking order based on the external evaluation process.
