Dr. and Docent Kari Väyrynen is Senior University Lecturer in the Department of History, Cultures and Communication Studies, University of Oulu, Finland, and co-director of the Oulu Centre for Theoretical and Philosophical Studies of History. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1992 his main interest has been in environmental philosophy and its history from Antiquity to the present day. He has written articles on the philosophy of nature in Kant’s, Hegel’s and Marx’s writings and published a monograph entitled “Ympäristöfilosofian historia” (The History of Environmental Philosophy) in 2006 in which he analyses the philosophical concepts of nature from Antiquity to the 19th century. Currently, he is carrying out research on the philosophy of history and the history of causal and modal thinking.
Dr. and Docent Esa Ruuskanen is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History, Cultures and Communication Studies, University of Oulu, Finland, and the person responsible for the minor subject in Environmental Humanities in the Faculty of Humanities. His research interests span the history of the utilisation and protection of peatlands in Western and Northern Europe from the 17th century onwards and energy history.
