This is the most important general info session for new international students, it is highly recommended that you attend. Orientation week for the new students will begin on Tuesday, September 1, 2020. There will be events organized by the University of Oulu, Oulu Business School and also the student association Finanssi ry.

Completing studies

The Oulu Business School course catalogues gives you an overview of your degree program, its structure and the timing of your studies. The catalogues also describes practices related to studies, so please read it carefully. Full course catalogues for academic year 2020-2021 are published later during the Spring semester. Currently there are drafts of the degree structures for 2020-2021 availbale at our Study Guides web page.

Personal tutor teacher (coordinator) and tutor students (kummi)

Each student in Master’s degree programmes have a designated personal tutor teacher (coordinators) and tutor students (kummi) who will guide and advice the student. Coordinator and kummi will provide support and assistance to students in their studies.

For new students at the Faculty of Education, 2020-2021

  • New students will be starting their studies on Monday, 31st of August. More detailed timetable will be published in August 2020.
  • In the first academic week, there will be information sessions, introduction to the university and getting to know what university studies are all about. Your regular studies also start this week. Be prepared to attend any events/teaching every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You will get a detailed program of events/studies from your small group tutors.

  • If you have studied at a university before and wish to acknowledge prior studies, this can be discussed during the first weeks with the study advisors.

1. Degree Program structures and courses

The faculty offers the following degree programs. The Finnish-medium degree structures can be found from the Finnish language website. The abbreviations used for the programs are found in the parentheses.

  • Special Education BA and MA (Erkka)

Master’s Programs in Education

The links above allow you to see in more detail a description of your degree program, the structure of the degree and the timing of the studies (Course Structure Diagram).

The 5-year program in the Faculty of Education comprise a 3-year Bachelor’s degree followed by a 2-year Master’s degree. The degrees include studies in the major subject and minor subject, language, communication and orientation studies, as well as elective courses. It is possible to take part in an international exchange and do practices abroad/in Finland during the studies. The study groups are typically 20 people.

The right to pursue studies in a 5-year program is granted for seven years, and that for studies in a 2-year Master’s program for four years.

You can find the course structure also at Weboodi as well as the course descriptions. You will also be using Weboodi during the first year to compose your personal study plan. Even without logging into Weboodi, you can read course descriptions by choosing Instruction/Courses -> Search or Course catalogues on the WebOodi homepage.

Please note that students admitted to the University may be requested to provide an extract from the criminal records for the assessment of their ability to study. Such an extract may be requested only from students whose studies include practical training or other activities involving work with minors.

The extract will be requested before the beginning of the practical training or other activity. To ensure the safety of minors, it is necessary to ascertain that the student about to begin practical training has no criminal record of certain serious crimes (sex offence, murder, aggravated assault and battery, aggravated burglary and robbery and narcotics offence).

3.   Study Counselling

You can seek counselling whenever you feel you need it. In the Faculty of Education, you are helped, among others, by the study advisors (Education Designers), teacher tutors and small group tutors. They are the special people who can help you in practical issues related to your studies and in the construction of your personal study plan. The study advisors' contact details can be found from Academic Affairs Service Teams web site.

In issues related to studies in other faculties, please get in touch with the education designers in each faculty. Their contact information can be found also from Academic Affairs Service Teams web site.

If you cannot get the help you need in the Faculty, the university and the Finnish Student Health Service also offer general counselling services. For more information, see here.

    MASTER´S PROGRAMMES IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING IN BRIEF

    In the field of biomedical engineering, there are two master´s programmes, national and international. The Faculty of Medicine (FMED) and Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) jointly organize these both programmes.     START OF STUDIES IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES RELATED TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    In this autumn, due to covid-19 pandemic, the studies will start in exceptional circumstances. The University of Oulu is following the covid-19 situation actively and is updating related information in web page Coronavirus COVID-19 – current issues.

    The university has decided to organize teaching mainly remotely during 1st period of the academic year between August 1 and October 25, 2020. However, during the orientation week for new students there is a possibility to organize meetings in small groups on campus during alternate days for students from different faculties. You will find more information about starting the studies here.

    Kindly remember that in all contact teaching you must follow the instructions concerning hand hygiene, safe distances and use of mouth and nose mask. Masks will also be available for participants on-site. Do not come to any event or participate in any contact teaching when sick or with any symptoms of infection. Should you have arrived in Oulu from abroad recently, kindly pay also attention to Finnish government’s recommendations concerning self-quarantine for 14 days.

    The briefing of the students of biomedical engineering is organized during programme´s  Linnanmaa campus day 

                                 on Monday 31st of August, 2020 from 14:00 to 16.00.

    It will be organized on-line via Teams and you have received invitation and link to it by email from the director of the degree programmes Professor Tapio Seppänen. Should you already have arrived in Oulu, you may participate in this meeting also on-site in lecture hall L2 in accordance with Covid-19 instructions above.

    In this briefing, there are participants from the degree programme, faculties´ academic affairs service teams and from the student Guild of Medical Technology Students of Oulu (OLTO). You will hear more about the degree programme/-s and about starting and proceeding with the studies. Your student tutors will also attend and they will be your guide if touring on campus and telling you about the studies and studying from the student´s point of view.

    The university will organize for all new students of the university Self-Hack workshop on 4th of Sept, 2020 from 10:00 to 15:00, primarily on-line.     Electronics and Communications Engineering

    Welcome to study!

    This information is for new international master’s students in Wireless Communications Engineering (WCE). In this page, we will publish information about the first week of studies. The studies will begin on Monday 31st of August, 2020. Detailed schedule will be published here in by the beginning of studies.

    • During the week, you will receive information about and material related to studies, get to know kummistudents, fellow students and staff of the degree program and acquaint with guild activities of Electronics and Communications Engineering students of Oulu (SIK guild) and with university's premises and study related IT facilities and tools.
    • During the week, you also will meet your tutor teacher, with whom you will prepare your personal study plan (PSP).

    On Friday 4th of Sept, 2020 will be organized Self-Hack event for all new students of the university. (Registration latest on 1.9. by 12 pm )

    In organizing programme-specific programme for the orientation week we follow university´s decision and other possible guidelines about organizing the studies in autumn term during the 1st  study period. More information will follow later.

    NOTE: Global Covid-19 pandemia has substantially delayed start-up of residence permit application process in most Finnish embassies around the globe. In addition, there may be corona quarantine of 2 weeks for many nationalities who will arrive Finland after receiving residence permit. That’s why only very few international students in can arrive to Oulu by 31st August.

    However, studies will start with distance learning mode with the aid of Zoom or Teams systems until at least by the end of first study period (25th October), or even later until the end of year 2020, if global pandemia get’s worse within next months. All covid-19 related UO information is gathered here.

    University of Oulu education service officials and WCE program coordinator & your personal tutoring teacher Dr. Kari Kärkkäinen will send practical information by the end of August and give detailed instructions how to start each course during 1st study period.

    University’s new study guide for academic year 2020-2021 is published at  https://opas.peppi.oulu.fi/en/index. The study guide includes information on degrees, curriculums, courses and course timetables after those have been fed in there. Information about the courses can be found by adding course code or name to ‘Search box’. NOTE: All information is not yet implemented there, but will be placed during year 2020.

    WCE programme specific study guide for the purpose of planning your studies can be found from https://opas.peppi.oulu.fi/en/programme/12386

    During the first period (1st August – 25th October) of the autumn semester, lectures will primarily be delivered remotely. PEPPI's study guide may still be information about the lecture hall, but the lectures are remote in the first period. Teachers send information about the course closer to the start of the course, when you are registered in the course.

    Students have to register for the courses in WebOodi. For registering you will need user ID & password of UO computer network which you will get after registering as a present student for study year 2020-21 and paying combined UO student union and student health service fee of 85,50 Eur for the study year.     Geosciences

    Information for new OMS degree students

    Here you can find information for new international degree students of Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining / Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing, or MRSM/Geosciences arriving for the autumn 2020

    (Incoming exchange students hosted by OMS have their own orientation events, please check those at the below-mentioned University of Oulu Orientation Programme.)

    The academic year 2020 launches with Orientation Weeks beginning on Monday 31.8.2020. International students' Orientation is organized on Tue 1.9.2020. It also includes a specific programme for new OMS students. Because of the corona virus pandemic, the orientation events are partly organized on-line.

    OMS Orientation Weeks for all new degree students will begin with information sessions. The weeks also include other events, e.g. UniOulu Self-Hack, planning your personal studies (preparing a Personal Study Plan). Some of your courses will start already on the first week.  You will also be nominated a Tutor Teacher.

    Personal Study Plan: Target to choose about 3 courses per one period which will give you about 15 cr  in one period:  15 cr per period / 30 cr per semester / 60 cr per academic year.

    Information for new OMS degree students

    Here you can find information for new international degree students of Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining / Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing, or MRSM/Geosciences arriving for the autumn 2020

    (Incoming exchange students hosted by OMS have their own orientation events, please check those at the below-mentioned University of Oulu Orientation Programme.)

    The academic year 2020 launches with Orientation Weeks beginning on Monday 31.8.2020. International students' Orientation is organized on Tue 1.9.2020. It also includes a specific programme for new OMS students. Because of the corona virus pandemic, the orientation events are partly organized on-line.

    OMS Orientation Weeks for all new degree students will begin with information sessions. The weeks also include other events, e.g. UniOulu Self-Hack, planning your personal studies (preparing a Personal Study Plan). Some of your courses will start already on the first week.  You will also be nominated a Tutor Teacher.

    Personal Study Plan: Target to choose about 3 courses per one period which will give you about 15 cr  in one period:  15 cr per period / 30 cr per semester / 60 cr per academic year.

    Computer Science and Engineering

    Welcome to study!

    This information is for new international master’s students in Computer Science and Engineering.
    In this page, we will publish information about the first week of studies. The studies will begin on Monday 31st of August, 2020. 

    • During the week, you will receive information about and material related to studies, get to know kummistudents, fellow students and staff of the degree programme and acquaint with guild activities of Computer Sience and Engineering students of Oulu (OTIT) and with university's premises and study related IT facilities and tools.
    • During the week, you also will meet your tutor teacher, with whom you will prepare your personal study plan (PSP).

    On Friday 4th of Sept, 2020 will be organized Self-Hack event for all new students of the university. (Registration latest on 1.9. by 12pm )

    In organizing programme-specific programme for the orientation week we follow university´s decision and other possible guidelines about organizing the studies in autumn during the 1. period. More information will follow later.

    Completing studies

    You find Programme Structure Diagram 2020-2021 from here.  

    University’s new study guide for academic year 2020-2021 is published at https://opas.peppi.oulu.fi. The study guide includes information on degrees, curriculums, courses and course timetables. Information about the courses can be found by adding course code or name to ‘Search box’. 

    During the first period (August 1- October 25) of the autumn semester, lectures will primarily be delivered remotely. PEPPI's study guide may still be information about the lecture hall, but the lectures are remote in the first period. Teachers send information about the course closer to the start of the course, when you are registered in the course.

    Students still register for the courses in WebOodi.
