This is the most important general info session for new international students, it is highly recommended that you attend. Matters covered include: university services, residence permits, Finnish Personal Identity code, language and culture studies, Health services, banking etc. You will also hear of the Alumni Ambassador programme and Kummi Family Programme.

This is where you pay the Student Union fee (114eur for full year, 57eur for Autumn term) and complete your university registration. Payments can either be made by cash or credit card. Make the payment first and then visit the Study Affairs desk at the same location so that your paid membership is marked also to weboodi.

Welcome to study at the Oulu Business School!

This information is for new international master’s students.

Orientation week for the new students will begin on Monday, September 2, 2019 at 8:15 in lecture hall L4. The events organized by the University of Oulu and the Oulu Business School are part of your studies, so please participate actively. As part of the orientation week program, new students also participate in the Self Hack event. The orientation week also includes volunteer events organized by the student association Finanssi ry.

Completing studies

The Oulu Business School course catalogues gives you an overview of your degree program, its structure and the timing of your studies. The catalogues also describes practices related to studies, so please read it carefully. Course catalogues are available in WebOodi.

Personal tutor teacher (coordinator) and tutor students (kummi)

Each student in Master’s degree programmes have a designated personal tutor teacher (coordinators) and tutor students (kummi) who will guide and advice the student. Coordinator and kummi will provide support and assistance to students in their studies.

For new students at the Faculty of Education, 2019-2020

  • New students will be starting their studies on Monday, 2nd of September at 9.00 a.m. in Lecture Hall L3 with a reception arranged for new students. You will find the location on this campus map.
  • The International Master program students' will have a separate reception at 8.00 at lecture hall L1. The program can be seen above.
  • In the first academic week, there will be information sessions, introduction to the university and getting to know what university studies are all about. Your regular studies also start this week. Be prepared to attend any events/teaching every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You will get a detailed program of events/studies from your small group tutors.

  • If you have studied at a university before and wish to acknowledge prior studies, this can be discussed during the first weeks with the ITE study advisors.

    1. Degree Program structures and courses

    The faculty offers the following degree programs. The Finnish-medium degree structures can be found from the Finnish language website. The abbreviations used for the programs are found in the parentheses.

    • Special Education BA and MA (Erkka)
    • Intercultural Teacher Education, BA and MA (ITE) 
    • Educational Sciences, BA and MA, major either Education or Educational Psychology (Kako)
    • Primary Teacher BA and MA (LO, four different groups and also Taika (arts specialization), Tekno (technology specialization))
    • Music Education Ba and MA (Muko)
    • Early Childhood Education BA and MA (Vaka)

    Master’s Programs in Education

    The links above allow you to see in more detail a description of your degree program, the structure of the degree and the timing of the studies (Course Structure Diagram).

    The 5-year program in the Faculty of Education comprise a 3-year Bachelor’s degree followed by a 2-year Master’s degree. The degrees include studies in the major subject and minor subject, language, communication and orientation studies, as well as elective courses. It is possible to take part in an international exchange and do practices abroad/in Finland during the studies. The study groups are typically 20 people.

    The right to pursue studies in a 5-year program is granted for seven years, and that for studies in a 2-year Master’s program for four years.

    You can find the course structure also at Weboodi as well as the course descriptions. You will also be using Weboodi during the first year to compose your personal study plan. Even without logging into Weboodi, you can read course descriptions by choosing Instruction/Courses -> Search or Course catalogues on the WebOodi homepage.

    Please note that students admitted to the University may be requested to provide an extract from the criminal records for the assessment of their ability to study. Such an extract may be requested only from students whose studies include practical training or other activities involving work with minors.

    The extract will be requested before the beginning of the practical training or other activity. To ensure the safety of minors, it is necessary to ascertain that the student about to begin practical training has no criminal record of certain serious crimes (sex offence, murder, aggravated assault and battery, aggravated burglary and robbery and narcotics offence).

    2. Teaching periods 2019-2020

    • 1. period (including the orientation week): weeks 36-43: 2.9. – 25.10.2019 
    • 2. period: weeks 44-51: 28.10. - 20.12.2019
    • 3. period: weeks 2-10: 6.1. - 6.3.2020
    • 4. period: weeks 11-19: 9.3. - 8.5.2020
    • Intensive period: weeks 20-22: 11.5. - 29.5.2020 
    • Summer semester: weeks 23-36: 1.6. - 31.8.2020

    Your regular studies start in orientation week and you might also have some courses after 11th of May. Teaching is given, typically, in stretches of 2 or 4 hours as follows: 8.15-9.45 am, 10.15-11.45 am, 12.15-13.45 pm, 14.15-15.45 pm.

    3.   Study Counselling

    You can seek counselling whenever you feel you need it. In the Faculty of Education, you are helped, among others, by the study advisors, teacher tutors and small group tutors. They are the special people who can help you in practical issues related to your studies and in the construction of your personal study plan. The study advisors' contact details can be found here.

    In issues related to studies in other faculties, please get in touch with the study counsellors in each faculty.

    If you cannot get the help you need in the Faculty, the university and the Finnish Student Health Service also offer general counselling services. For more information, see here.


    4. Student Organisations

    The student organisations representing different subjects arrange a variety of events and look after the interests of students during their studies at the university. You are welcome to join in the organisation represented by your own degree program.       In the field of biomedical engineering there are two master´s programmes, national and international. They are both jointly organized by the Faculty of Medicine (FMED) and Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). Students of the programme at the Faculty of Medicine will graduate as Masters of Health Sciences (MHSc) and at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering - Masters of Science (MSc Tech).

      Academic Year 2019-2020 Orientation Events

      UO will organize on September 2-6, 2019 a general orientation week for all international students in order to help students to settle down at the campus. In addition, the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) offers specific orientation event for WCE and double-degree students (DD-WCE) on 5.9.2019, 16:00-19:000 o'clock at room TS101. Your student tutor, called "Kummi" in Finnish, will guide you there.

      It is extremely crucial for you to join UO orientation week programme. WCE teaching also starts on Monday 2.9.2018.

      New Students at the Industrial Engineering and Management & Product Management Master’s Programme

       

      The orientation week starts on Monday 2.9. at 8 o’clock in the Lecture Hall L1.

      At 11.15-13 there is the Degree Programme Receiption. Most of the Industrial Engineering and Management & Product Management orientation week's events are held in TUTA Studiem, TF433, which is located at the Industrial Engineering and Management Research Unit’s facilities.

      You can find it from “Tekniikankatu” on the 4th floor, you can use the elevator or the stairs.
