The University of Oulu is targeting strategic support to 12 research projects in the University’s two strategic focus areas of research, “Creating sustainability by materials and systems” and “Earth and near-space system and environmental change”. The research projects have been selected for 2017-2020 through a peer-review by a scientific evaluation committee. The research projects will be introduced in a research seminar and workshop on 20. – 21. November at Tellus Innovation Arena at the University of Oulu (Street address: Erkki Koiso-Kanttilan katu 1, Oulu, way to Tellus on a map).
The first day introduces the highlights of the research in sustainable resource use and Earth’s changing environment and provides an introduction to the strategic research in the two focus areas. Keynote speakers are Associate Professor Nønne Prisle, Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit, University of Oulu, and Professor Jouni Pulliainen, Head of the Arctic Research Centre, Finnish Meteorological Institute. On the second day, the keynote speaker is Adjunct Professor Thomas Ulich from the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory. The second day is open for other researcher presentations.

Promoting multidisciplinary research and coordinating the Technology and Natural Sciences Doctoral Program will be a task of the new focus institute Kvantum, which will start on 1 January, 2018. Other focus institutes are Biocenter Oulu, Eudaimonia and Infotech Oulu.
