Using laser cutters, participants will design and produce artifacts that reflect their perspectives on ecological, social, or cultural sustainability.

The workshop begins with a short introduction to sustainable design principles and the environmental impact of materials and production methods. Participants will then engage in a guided design activity where they create expressive pieces (such as wearable messages, symbolic objects, or visual storytelling panels).

Participants will be encouraged to reflect on questions like: What does sustainability mean to me? What messages do I want to share? How can making be a form of activism or care? The workshop blends artistic expression with technical skills, allowing participants to turn their ideas into tangible outcomes using Fab Lab tools.

Practical info

On 23rd we organize two workshops:

10:00 - 12:00; max 10 participants
13:00 - 15:00; max 10 participants

Pre-registration is required to attend the workshops, unless there are remaining spots available.

Ideal but not obligatory:

Participants are kindly encouraged to bring their laptops and install Inkscape in advance: https://inkscape.org
To facilitate easier design work in the software, we also recommend bringing a mouse, as it significantly improves usability.

During the workshop, we’ll be using a CAD/CAM process—starting with digital design in Inkscape and then moving on to fabrication using machines. The available equipment includes a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, and a heat press machine, which will allow participants to bring their designs to life through various materials and techniques.

To participate:

Please register by sending an email to behnaz.norouzi@oulu.fi
In your message, kindly indicate:
Which workshop you would like to attend: workshop 1 (10:00 - 12:00) or workshop 2 ( 13:00 - 15:00).
Whether you will bring your laptop with you!

Each workshop is limited to 10 participants, and spots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis—so we recommend registering early!

The deadline for registration: 22nd September 2025, at 13:00.

If you are unable to attend after registering, we kindly ask you to cancel your registration well-in advance by sending an email to behnaz.norouzi@oulu.fi, so your spot can be offered to someone else.Practical info
