Participatory action research
This interactive workshop will explore origins and principles of participatory action research methods and their application in transformative knowledge production within social sciences. In the workshop we will reflect on dilemmas faced when trying to balance the multiple imperatives of participatory action research to be explanatory, rooted, actionable and critical. We will also go through some practical examples that make visible different opportunities and pitfalls when working with participatory action research. The workshop is targeted towards staff and PhD students, as it is an advantage that they have conducted some research (not necessarily PAR) that they can reflect upon. However, also master students are welcome to attend this workshop. The workshop will be held in English. Maximum number of participants is 20-25. Workshop is hosted by keynote speaker Hilde Refstie.

Science communication workshop
The workshop focuses on the social impact of research and researchers, as well as scientific communication. The workshop will practice the practical skills of science communication where participants can choose between two themes after a joint introduction: popularized science writing (in Finnish only) or graphics and posters (in Finnish/English). This workshop is suitable for both undergraduate students and doctoral researchers. We aim to organize the workshop primarily on site in Oulu. The workshop is organized by the Society for Regional and Environmental Studies (AYS) together with the Versus online research forum.
