Reminder: Changes in Curriculum and Degree Structure, English

Changes to the curriculum and degree structure of English have been implemented in 2020. Read more about the changes and how they affect studies during the academic year 2021-2022 below.

CURRICULUM AND DEGREE STRUCTURE FROM AUGUST 1, 2020

1. The name of the subject will change from ‘English Philology’ to ‘English’ (englannin kieli in Finnish).

2. The following changes to the structure and the scope of the advanced studies in English as well as the timing of the pedagogical studies will be implemented starting August 1, 2020:

Advanced studies

  • The scope of the master’s thesis changes from 40 credits to 30 credits
  • The scope of the advanced studies in the major subject English changes from 80 credits to 60 credits
  • The structure of the advanced studies is thus the following:
    • 682436S Master’s Seminar and Thesis 30 sp
    • Elective advanced-level courses 30 sp (6 x 5 sp)

Pedagogical studies

The pedagogical studies (60 credits) in the subject teacher line will be included entirely in the master’s degree and will be taken during the autumn and spring semesters of the fourth year of studies. The new timing of pedagogical studies will be implemented starting in autumn 2023.

Students who began their studies in autumn 2019 and will be selected in the subject teacher line in January 2021 will still complete the pedagogical studies in the spring semester of their third year of study and in the autumn semester of their fourth year (i.e. in 2022).

TRANSITIONAL PROVISIONS

Students enrolled in or before the 2019 student selection have a two-year transition period to complete their studies in accordance with the structure of the previous curriculum, which is valid until July 31, 2020.

The length of the transition period is two academic years: August 1, 2020 – July 31, 2022.

The Dean of Education of the Faculty of Humanities will approve the last 40-credit master’s theses in June 2022. As of August 1, 2022, all theses will be 30 credits in scope.

In those major subjects / fields of study (such as English) where the scope of the advanced studies changes from August 1, 2020 onwards, the student may choose whether to complete their

  • Advanced studies as 60, 70 or 80 credits
  • Master’s thesis as 30 or 40 credits

For the advanced studies of English, the following combinations are possible during the transition period (for students enrolled in or before the 2019 student selection):

  • 682382S Master’s seminar 10 sp
  • 682320S Master’s thesis 40 sp
  • Elective advanced-level courses 30 sp (6 x 5 sp)

OR

  • 682382S Master’s seminar 10 sp
  • 682436S Master’s Seminar and Thesis 30 sp
  • Elective advanced-level courses 30 sp (6 x 5 sp)

OR

  • 682436S Master’s Seminar and Thesis 30 sp
  • Elective advanced-level courses 30 sp (6 x 5 sp)

Everyone starting their master’s thesis should sign up for the new 682436S Master’s Seminar and Thesis course, where the selection between the above options will be made. The old 682382S Master’s Seminar course will no longer be taught.

If you have already completed the 682382S Master’s Seminar course, you can choose the scope of your thesis (30 sp or 40 sp). You should consult your supervisor before making this decision.
