The Microelectronics Research Unit (MIC; together with Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics and Technology (MIPT;, University of Oulu, Finland, invites applications for one postdoctoral research fellow position for the period 01.01.2018 - 31.12.2018 funded by EU H2020. The work contract includes a trial period of four months and the possibility to be renewed for a second year according to annual performance evaluation.

Research Environment

The position will be shared between the two Research Units: MIC (Linnanmaa campus) and MIPT (Kontinkangas campus). The time spent in each unit will be allocated according the tasks. MIC is an internationally recognized, high excellence team with significant scientific impact in the fields of micro and nanosystem technologies. The main focus of the research is on the synthesis and application of functional nanomaterials, structures and assemblies that are implemented in electrical, electrochemical, optical and sensing devices as well as in environmental control, biotechnology and biomedical applications. MIPT is an internationally recognized research unit in the fields of medical and biomedical imaging, physics and technology. MIPT Research Unit has extensive experience in world-class research related to diagnostics of musculoskeletal diseases and functional neuroimaging.

The position is to be filled by a highly motivated researcher with excellent skills and proficiency in his/her fields. We are looking for a candidate who has a strong background in biochemistry and cell biology, and whose research interests are related to one or several of the following topics:

  • evaluation of joint tissues
  • surface chemistry/functionalization
  • tissue engineering, cell growth and characterization techniques
  • Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy
  • FTIR microscopy
  • Raman microscopy
  • micro-computed tomography
  • Fluorescence and atomic force microscopy

Ability to report and interpret measurement data and place the results in the context of literature background is required. In addition to the laboratory-related work, it is expected that the candidate contribute in the project management.  English skills are required to fill the position.  


The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level 5 chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, an additional salary component (not more than 46.3% of the basic salary level) will be paid based on personal achievement and performance. A separate agreement will be made on the teaching duties connected with the position within the framework of an annual work plan of 1624 hours, with the maximum being 5 % of the annual working hours as per the existing collective agreement.
