Matkailun maantieteellisessä tutkimuksessa (Tourism Geographies) tarkastellaan matkailua, siihen liittyviä vuorovaikutus- ja muutosprosesseja alueellisesta näkökulmasta.

Tutkimusryhmän kuvaus

Oulussa matkailumaantieteen tutkimuksen keskeisenä näkökulmana on kestävyys. Tutkimuskohteina ovat muun muassa matkailun kestävyys ja vastuullisuus, matkailualan ja YK:n kestävän kehityksen Agenda 2030:n tavoitteiden suhde, matkailun aluekehitysvaikutukset, matkailutalous ja ilmastonmuutos ja matkailun ja paikallisuuden suhde.

Lisäksi tutkitaan muun muassa matkailun ja muun maankäytön synergioita ja ristiriitoja, matkailutalouden poliittista ekologiaa, maaseutumatkailua ja matkailun osallistavaa suunnittelua. Matkailua ja siihen vaikuttavia maantieteellisiä tekijöitä tarkastellaan alueellisesti ja suhteessa eri maantieteellisiin ja ajallisiin mittakaavoihin.

Maantieteellinen matkailun tutkimus sisältää myös kehitysmaantieteeseen ja yhteiskuntatieteelliseen ympäristömuutostutkimukseen liittyviä lähtökohtia. Matkailumaantieteellinen tutkimus pyrkii yhdistämään teoreettisen ja empiirisen lähestymistavan kaihtamatta kvantitatiivisia tai kvalitatiivisia näkökulmia. Empiirisesti tutkimustoiminta painottuu Pohjois-Suomeen ja arktiselle alueelle sekä eteläiseen Afrikkaan.
