Both curricula include a joined excursion to the town of Inari, Northern Lapland.
Excursion to Inari will lead the participants to the heart of Finnish Lapland with Arctic landscapes and clear Arctic lakes. There the participants will learn in an authentic environment and in the exclusive premises of The Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos about the culture, traditions, and livelihoods of the only indigenous peoples in Europe, the Sámi.
The participants will learn how the Sámi cultivate and uphold their traditions and their way of life. The course will focus especially on the traditional Sámi handicraft, clothing and tools, and on how they have lasted through time and have been brought to the modern age as part of everyday life of the Sámi today.
In addition to the academic content, the excursion offers a variety of other activities in the unique surroundings of Inari. For example, did you know that berry picking is allowed practically in all forest areas in Finland? The excursion will include activities such as walking in the nature and getting to know the gifts of Inari’s nature and forests, such as different kinds of edible berries.
During the week, students will transform their newly acquired understanding into action and produce a change making final project as a group work. Final projects aim to interpret and find ways to share and spread the knowledge acquired on the programme about the Arctic areas, Arctic cultures and change.
