Water Resources and Environmental Engineering

Our mission is to carry out high quality research and education focusing on water and soil environmental engineering. We produce environmental engineers and doctors who have a strong knowledge in processes, modelling and management. Our international research unit of 30 persons has a strong expertise in hydrology and water research related to hydrological processes, modelling and management. We carry out both basic and applied research related to surface waters, wetlands, groundwater, geoenvironment, water supply and wastewater treatment. The research is often linked to land use and climate change, with a focus on mitigation and problem solving.

The research unit has access to wide data sets and have several on-going field scale research experiments. We possess a wide set of field equipment and laboratories for water chemical and soil physical properties analysis. The research unit have a good track record in i) hydrology of peatlands, ii) peatland uses, environmental impacts and their control, iii) groundwater-surface water interaction, iv) constructed wetlands, v) groundwater and vi) river engineering.

Water resources and environmental engineering research group unit carry out high quality research focusing on water and soil environmental engineering topics. We have lead and participated on several EU, Academy of Finland, Regional EU fund and foundation funded projects. The Master degree program produces annually about 15 environmental engineers with skills in water resources, water treatment, and geotechnical engineering. Since 2017, the research unit is part of international Nordic Centres of Excellence for bioeconomy.
